This day is reminiscent of all the victims of an unprecedented totalitarianism during
the time of the National Socialism: Jews, Christians, Sinti and Romanies, disabled
people, homosexuals, dissidents as well as members of the resistance, scientists,
artists, journalists, prisoners of war and deserters, old people and children at the
front, forced laborers and the millions of people who were disenfranchised, persecuted,
tortured and killed.

On January 27th, 1945 the soldiers of the Red Army liberated the survivors of the
extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The concentration camp Auschwitz (-Birkenau) is
regarded as a symbol of the holocaust and the millions of victims of the Nazi regime.

奥斯维辛集中营是纳粹德国在 第二次世界大战 期间修建的1000多座集中营中最大的一座。由于有上百万人在这里被德国法西斯杀害，它又被称为"死亡工厂"。该集中营距波兰首都 华沙 300多公里，是波兰南部奥斯维辛市附近40多座集中营的总称。该集中营是纳粹德国党卫军全国领袖（Reichsfuehrer SS）海因里希。希姆莱1940年4月27日下令建造的。
奥斯威辛集中营先后共监禁过数百万各类人士，其中有约110万人被夺去生命，28个民族的人死于集中营，受害者主要是波兰和欧洲其他国家的 犹太人、吉卜赛人、波兰人和苏联俘虏。其中犹太人最多。
1945年1月27日苏联红军解放奥斯维辛集中营的时候，只找到7650名幸存者，其中有130名儿童。
