Next Level Gaming\'s Official Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend Video Game Preview
E3 2005: Lara Croft is almost back, and it\'s going to drive us crazy thinking about her all summer!

There comes a time in every womans life when they feel like they need a makeover.  Oh, don\'t get mad at me.  You know it happens.  Even my wife makes those comments now and again that she wishes she wasn\'t so (place her self-esteem comments here, CAREFULLY fellas).  Well, alot of people were looking for that very makeover for Lara Croft.  You remember Lara Croft don\'t you?  She used to be the most sought after female video game character in the history of games.  From her origins on the Sony Playstation (which helped bring the PSX to it\'s eventual fame), to what many believed was the day she died with Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, Lara Croft has gotten everything including the movie treatment.  Tomb Raider\'s original developers Core stated off with such a strong product.  Lara was the female Indiana Jones.  Tomb Raider was an apt name for her series.  And men across the video game universe went nuts every time a new game came out.  But then the entire series started to just get stale and bad.  Core had lost it\'s focus, and really brought the game to a halt.  The last couple of Tomb Raider games tanked.  It was so bad that when the movie sequel The Cradle of Life tanked, Paramount Pictures actually blamed the game series for it.   At this point Eidos had seen enough.  Core had to be dealt with on this.  And so they stripped the Tomb Raider franchise away from them and began looking at other developers.  It was shortly after that Eidos would find their prize developers; the only ones who had the best shot at breathing some new life into one of their flagship franchises. That developer would be Crystal Dynamics.  Yes, the same Crystal Dynamics who has been responsible for some of the better games out there.  Game series like Blood Omen, Legacy of Kain, Gex, and more recently Project: Snowblind.  Their goal?  Bring Lara Croft back from the dead to the place of gaming excellence she used to be at.

It\'s a task that Crystal Dynamics not only took seriously, but with great excitement as they begun work on Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend.

"Even before the first title launched, Lara Croft had to fight her way into the Tomb Raider franchise, since at the time most game characters were muscle-bound blokes... The Lara Croft character is resilient and totally unstoppable. In Tomb Raider: Legend, we explore these core personality traits and reveal the Lara Croft gamers have been waiting to see."

Toby Gard, lead character designer

It was at E3 that we finally got a chance to see Lara Croft in action once again.  And I have to say that although all they were showing off was one small part of a level for us, it was great to see what a veteran developer was able to do in such a short time to make us excited once again for Tomb Raider.   The game even in this development stage is so much better than the final Core game that we aren\'t even listing it with the other Tomb Raider\'s.  Anyway, the first thing we noticed off the bat was that Lara was working with a little more.......shall we say......hotness to her.   Toby and company were able to bump up Lara\'s polygon count to over twice the amount of Angel of Darkness.  They estimated she would be made of about 9,500-10,000 polygons.  What does that mean to the average gamer?  Don\'t worry, I\'m not all that big on numbers either.  How about we just take a look?

This is Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness:

Now, here is Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: Legend

Not even close!  Lara looks really nice, and this is an in-game screen.  But still shots and up close camera angles are only half the story.  How does Lara animate?  After all she is athletic, acrobatic, and does a lot of jumping and swinging and hanging and shooting.  Well, the level that the Crystal was showing off was a very classic Tomb Raider setting; inside an ancient structure with plenty of hanging bridges, cliffs, and the like.  They began to show us how Lara will be able to move throughout the environment.  Much of this encompasses elements you\'ve played before in Tomb Raider.  The idea wasn\'t to scrap the familiar gameplay engine for something else.  But the were intent on tightening the controls a lot.  And while familiar, Crystal also updated and worked with the way Lara interacted with the environment.  Everything is going to be fluid and seamless, right down to the levels themselves.  What we were told by the guys demoing for us was that the game even on the Playstation 2 was going to load your part of the level, plus the adjacent areas ahead and behind you into memory.  This is going to mean no loading times between areas.  There will be cut scenes and stuff like that.  But you won\'t go through an imaginary hallway and wait for a new part of the same level to load up.

A lot of the new animations include the way Lara handles objects like pulling levers and pushing things around.  One of the new animations that popped out at me during the level was the way Lara grabbed a ledge while in mid-air after a jump.  Instead of merely sticking your arms in the air and latching onto a ledge, she actually sticks out one arm (like a gymnast) and grabs at the ledge.  If it\'s something that swings, she\'ll swing with it.  In the case of poles that stick out of the wall and such, she\'ll be able to spin around to face the other way, or do more gymnastic moves to swing up and stand on the pole.  The demo was just so cool I actually hung around to watch it a second time so I could see some of these animations again.   And to complement the update in the graphic system is an update to the physics engine as well.

Lastly, and this is not something that was really shown in the E3 demo, but we know that Laura is going to have access to a lot of gear for her adventures.  Of course she is going to have her trademark double pistols ready to go in case she runs into trouble.  Lara was not a big martial-arts fighter like they tried to make her out to be in Angel of Darkness.  Lara can throw a nice side kick when she needs to, but she\'s not a ninja.  So her strength lies in her guns, and she well use them without hesitation.  You never bring a knife to a gunfight.  But this game isn\'t going to be about fighting and the \"run-and-gun\".  Tomb Raider at it\'s core was NOT a shooter.  It was an action/platform puzzle solving game.  That is what Tomb Raider: Legend is getting back to.

Tomb Raider: Legend is going to bring Lara Croft back in a big way.  The fall can\'t come fast enough, and we can\'t wait to actually get our hands on some gameplay ourselves.  The Crystal Dynamics guys were very adamant about not allowing anyone to actually play the game.  But that\'s OK.  Now we are left with just one question.  We know the game is coming out for the Xbox, Playstation 2 (which is the lead platform), and the PC.  But we\'ve already seen listings at EB Games AND Gamestop for an Xbox 360 version.  Our Eidos reps have not confirmed this to be the case.....yet.  We\'ll let you know if that changes.   In the meantime, we leave you with a beautiful set of two trailers, and we invite you over to the game page to check out an entire slew of gorgeous screenshots of Lara in action.  Crystal Dynamics is poised to renew the faith we all had in the Tomb Raider series!
